WHY WE PRAY
Prayer serves as an opportunity to cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus. Just as in any relationship, conversation, and connection are vital for growth. Through prayer, we become partners with God, aligning our will with His purposes and participating in His redemptive work in the world. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to seek and pray for God’s will to be realized on Earth.
HOW TO START PRAYING
To begin your prayer time, you can use the acronym P.R.A.Y.
Praise: Start by recognizing God’s worthiness of worship and gratitude for His blessings.
Repent: Reflect on your heart, repenting and turning away from anything that hinders your relationship with God.
Ask: Bring your requests to God, trusting in His ability to meet your needs.
Yield: Submit to God’s wisdom and trust Him regardless of the outcome (Philippians 4:6-7).
Praying Scripture is another powerful way to communicate with God. Scriptures like Ephesians 1:15-23, Ephesians 3:14-21, 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5, Philippians 1:9-11, and Colossians 1:9-14 offer rich prayers that you can personalize for yourself and others.
WHY WE FAST
Fasting is abstaining from food to seek God. It creates space to grow closer to Him, align our hearts with His, and depend on Him. Fasting is a spiritual discipline focused on inviting God into our space. Through fasting, we can amplify our prayers and experience God in a deeper way.
A decision to add something to our daily routine can compound in these 21 days to make an impact in our hearts. Ten minutes devoted to prayer and ten minutes devoted to reading the scriptures could mean a significant change in the way we see ourselves, others, and our world. We can add acts of service, reflection, or study that can make this season fruitful on many levels.
Fasting is a spiritual discipline recognized as a meaningful way to grow in faith. Choosing to press pause on good things in our lives (foods like meat, sweets, pop, or media like TV or social media) can help us focus on God and sharpen our desire for him. Fasting nurtures an appetite for God in our lives over all other appetites.
Complete Fast: Abstaining from all food for a specific period, such as from 6 AM to 6 PM or for several days.
Meal-Specific Fast: Choosing to skip a particular meal, like breakfast or dinner, to focus on seeking God.
Abstaining: While fasting typically refers to going without food, abstaining involves temporarily giving up other things—like TV, social media, or specific activities—to remove distractions and focus on God. These practices can complement fasting.
Technology: Abstaining from TV, social media, or other technologies for a period of time.
Partial Fast: Choosing to abstain from specific types of food, such as in the Daniel Fast.
