As we step into 2024, we’re inviting the whole church to join together in committing the first three weeks of the year to prayer and fasting. This will be a time to ask God to meet the needs of New City Church as we believe in faith that He will move in powerful ways.

One of the greatest ways we grow our faith is in community. Gather weekly for prayer and worship as we press in for 21 days of Prayer and Fasting.

Why Fast?

The act of fasting is sacrificing one of our most essential daily routines. Trusting that God will meet us in our hunger, and feed us by his word. Fasting is an act of intimacy with the Father. Not to get something from Him, but to get to know Him. Fasting nurtures an appetite for God in our lives over all others.

Why Pray?

Prayer gives us confident assurance that God is in control and working all things out for our good. It’s not about the right words, or perfect time, but an awareness of the constant invitation we have to directly speak to the Father.

How can I begin praying?

Have A Certain Time
Jesus got up early in the morning to spend time with His Heavenly Father. Make a daily appointment with God — whether it’s first thing in the morning, at lunch, or in the evening — and faithfully keep it.

Have A Certain Place
Jesus had a specific place He went to pray. Having a designated place to pray helps us remove distractions and frees us to worship and pray out loud.

Have A Certain Plan
When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He gave them a prayer outline. We call it “The Lord’s Prayer.” As we pray every day, consider incorporating some worship music, or additional time to read the Bible or journal. Not everyone’s approach will look the same, but it does help to have a plan for connecting regularly with God!

To begin your journey of prayer, ask Jesus to teach you how to pray and start conversing with Him throughout your day. The Lord's Prayer in Luke 11:1-4 serves as an excellent starting point, allowing you to meditate on each word and adopt it as your own heartfelt expression:

Luke 11:1-4
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.

You can begin your prayers by using the acronym P.R.A.Y.

Praise: Start by recognizing God's worthiness of worship and gratitude for His blessings.

Repent: Reflect on your heart, repenting and turning away from anything that hinders your relationship with God.

Ask: Bring your requests to God, trusting in His ability to meet your needs.

Yield: Submit to God's wisdom and trust Him regardless of the outcome (Philippians 4:6-7).

Praying Scripture is another powerful way to communicate with God. Scriptures like Ephesians 1:15-23, Ephesians 3:14-21, 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5, Philippians 1:9-11, and Colossians 1:9-14 offer rich prayers that you can personalize for yourself and others.
